From Teacher to Entrepreneurial Trailblazer
Jyoti constantly desired to chart her path, but uncertainty loomed over the ‘how’ and ‘what’ of her entrepreneurial dream.
Jyoti shares, “When I was a school teacher, I always thought about doing something independently. However, I always had a question about how to begin with. That’s when I learned about self-help groups (SHGs). I joined the Gyan Ganga SHG in my village and learned everything about starting my own business.”
Starting the Business with a Loan
She took a loan from CCL and started her work by ordering raw materials for her business from Raipur. However, just as she began, the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, and like many others, her work stopped. But she had already decided that she would not give up so easily. So, she started her work again, making various items like travel bags, school bags, handbags, and mobile pouches. She made every effort to ensure that her work progressed in some way. Today, she is producing bags of various patterns made from leather and cotton.
Family Support and Community Impact
Jyoti’s family, particularly her brothers, rallied behind her entrepreneurial pursuit. Together, they strategically market the products within government schools and other institutions. Jyoti’s earnings have surged, showcasing the transformative power of entrepreneurship.
Diversifying Income Via The Bank Sakhi Initiative
Not only is she involved in making bags, but Jyoti has also become a ‘Bank Sakhi’. She says, “I have also learned banking work. Today, I work for the group members at the bank operated by Kumhari Nagar Palika. Along with the successful bag-making work, my training to become a Bank Sakhi has brought in good income for me. Now, I am living a life of respect in my village. Today, I am a businesswoman and proud of it.”
Government Support and Recognition
Jyoti’s success radiates beyond personal achievements. With the backing of her Self Help Group, she secured government loans through RF (Revolving Fund) and the district. Her story underscores the potential for financial independence and respect that comes with entrepreneurial endeavours.

Jyoti Sahu’s journey epitomises entrepreneurship’s transformative impact on individuals and communities. Her evolution from a school teacher to a successful businesswoman is a personal achievement and a beacon of inspiration for others contemplating a similar path.
