In the heart of Madhya Pradesh, nestled in the Narsinghpur district’s Chawarpatha block, lies the village of Madesur. This village, once known for its struggling labour force, has now become a beacon of hope and transformation, thanks to the relentless efforts of the women who call it home. Among these inspiring women is Vaijayanti Jatav, whose journey from a labourer to a successful entrepreneur is a tale of resilience, hard work, and the power of community.
The Struggles of Labor
Vaijayanti’s story began in the dusty lanes of Madesur, where she, along with other women in the village, would leave early in the morning to work as labourers. Their meagre wages were barely enough to make ends meet, and dreams of a better future seemed like a distant fantasy. However, their lives took a turn when the local Ajeevika Mission introduced them to the concept of self-help groups (SHGs).

The Spark of Change: Self-Help Groups
Under this initiative, the women of Madesur were organised into SHGs, where they received training and support to start their ventures. One such venture was fish farming, a new concept for the village with immense potential. With guidance from the Fisheries Department, the women were taught the nuances of fish farming, from preparing ponds to nurturing fish seeds.
The pivotal moment for Vaijayanti and her group, Divya Self Help Group, came with the development of Pushkar Pond. This previously unused and neglected pond was rejuvenated under the Pushkar Pond Campaign. The Fisheries Department provided fish seeds and extensive training, enabling the women to start their fish farming project.
Vaijayanti recalls, “Before this initiative, we all worked as labourers. But once the pond was ready, we received training in fish farming. Last year, we introduced fish seeds into the pond, and now we are reaping the benefits.”
The transformation was almost magical. The first harvest yielded approximately two quintals of fish, which they sold at 100 rupees per kilogram, earning them a substantial income. The once struggling labourers had now become confident entrepreneurs, managing and selling fish and supporting their families with dignity. “We have earned enough to support our families and invest back into our business,” says Vaijayanti with pride.
A Community Transformed
Durga Jatav, another group member, shares her experience, “After the training, we started working on the pond. Traders and buyers come directly to us to purchase fish. We plan to expand this business further.”
The success of their venture attracted attention from traders far and wide, and the women soon became adept at negotiating and managing their growing business.
The impact of this project was not limited to just financial gains. The women, who once struggled for basic necessities, now found themselves empowered and respected within their community. The fish farming venture provided direct employment to 20 women from 10 different groups, and their success stories inspired many more.
The Spirit of Self-Reliance
The women of Madesur, with their determination and newfound skills, have demonstrated the true spirit of self-reliance. They have shown that even the most marginalised communities can transform their lives with the proper support and opportunities. Vaijayanti and her peers’ journey is a testament to the power of unity, hard work, and the transformative potential of sustainable livelihood projects.

Today, Madesur stands as a shining example of rural empowerment. The women who once toiled as labourers are now successful entrepreneurs, leading their village towards a brighter future. Their story is a beacon of hope for countless others, proving that with determination and support, anything is possible.
