Initially, these women were confined to the walls of their homes, their potential untapped. Their encounter with the self-help group introduced them to detergent powder manufacturing, beginning a new chapter in their lives. Gradually, their products gained market acceptance, leading to a steady income that significantly improved their financial standing. Initially comprising 11 women, the group has become a source of inspiration for many in the region.

A member named Asha from the Vaishnavi Self-Help Group in Laxmipur Jarlahiya village shares their inspiring journey- “Initially, women in our village spent their days immersed in household chores, their potential untapped. The turning point came when we joined the self-help group, which opened doors to new possibilities. We learned to make detergent powder, a skill that was unfamiliar to us before.”

She further shares — “Gradually, as we perfected our craft, our products began to find a place in the market. Sales picked up, and our earnings started to improve significantly. Eleven women from our group have joined this endeavour, transforming our lives and setting a precedent in the village.”

The Challenge and the Triumph

The Ajeevika Mission played a pivotal role in forming the self-help group in 2020. Initially, the women were hesitant about this new venture. However, with the support of a loan, they were able to venture into the detergent-making business. This marked the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey, with an initial investment of 2,63,000 rupees. Today, they earn between 6,000 and 8,000 rupees monthly, a testament to their hard work and the support they received.

The members faced initial reluctance from their families regarding joining the self-help group and starting this new work. However, as the income started flowing in and they began contributing to household expenses, their families’ scepticism became support. The demand for the detergent powder produced by the Laxmipur Jarlahiya village group has been on a steady rise, reflecting the quality and acceptance of their products in the market.

One of their group members shared- “In the beginning, even our family members were hesitant about us joining the self-help group and embarking on this new venture. The concept of us stepping out of the traditional household roles to engage in business activities was met with resistance. However, the perspective shifted as we started earning and contributing to the household income. Our initial earnings, though modest, demonstrated the potential of our collective effort and the viability of our venture.”

The timely financial aid in the form of loans significantly bolstered the journey of these women. This external support was crucial in overcoming the initial capital hurdle, enabling them to purchase raw materials and necessary equipment to kickstart their detergent production. This support has been crucial in our journey towards becoming self-reliant and has paved the way for us to contribute meaningfully to our household incomes.”
